Copying Music?

• Do I need a PPI licence to copy music?

  • PPI is mandated to licence the copying of recorded music in certain, restricted circumstances:

    •If you want to commercially supply recorded music for background entertainment in public places,
    •If you produce personal videos e.g. wedding videos, and want to include recorded music,
    •If you are an independent radio or TV producer making programmes for a PPI-licensed broadcaster.
    

    PPI’s copying licences are available only for these activities. Copying recorded music for any other purpose requires permission from the owners of the copyright in the recordings.

Background Music Suppliers

• I want to start a business supplying background music. What do I need to do?
  • You need to apply for a PPI dubbing licence and sign an agreement with PPI.

    If you get your music from a background music supplier, make sure he/she has a PPI Dubbing Licence. You could be participating in copyright theft if you use music from an unlicensed source.

  • You need to apply for a PPI personal videos licence and sign an agreement with PPI.

Independent TV & Radio Producers

• As an independent radio/TV producer I want to use recorded music in my production. What do I need to do?
  • If the TV or radio programme has been commissioned by a PPI-licensed broadcaster in Ireland, then the dubbing or synch is covered by the agreement between PPI and the broadcaster. Just contact us with the name of the broadcaster you are producing for and details of the tracks you want to use and we’ll let you know if they are covered.
    If you are making a TV or radio programme "on spec", to sell it on to a broadcaster, PPI cannot licence the dubbing of recorded music and you must get permission directly from the owners of the copyright in the recordings.
